WATTS TOWERS by Sam Rodia
the Watts Towers Arts Center

verticality height and upward movement

The Watts Towers as seen from the rear of the parcel of land where Sam Rodia had lived and worked in his spare time.
Weightlessness helps support the towers.

Ferrocement is strong. With ii Simon Rodia has woven his towers-environment like a spider weaves its web. Does it know what it is making? Did Sam know? I think he started somewhere and let his imagination lead the way - his hands following and making use of his acquired knowledge of materials. He climbed his own web expanding it higher and higher - until the towers became Watts Towers.
