WATTS TOWERS by Sam Rodia
the Watts Towers Arts Center

verticality height and upward movement

The Watts Towers as seen from the rear of the parcel of land where Sam Rodia had lived and worked in his spare time.
The towers seem weightless with their transparent texture.

Though structurally not necessary, Sam Rodia felt the need to enrich the ferrocement structures with color and glitter. He did not have the finances to make or have decorative parts fabricated. But he used any durable material he could get his hand on. Broken ceramic products are abundant and cost nothing. Broken bottles are as durable as ceramic materials.
