WATTS TOWERS by Sam Rodia
the Watts Towers Arts Center

verticality height and upward movement

The Watts Towers as seen from the rear of the parcel of land where Sam Rodia had lived and worked in his spare time.
This junction of the flying buttresses wasn't Sam's esthetic concern.

It was all about the feast of color and materials - breathing new life into waste - durable waste. Nowadays we call it recycling. This is not the most beautiful detail of the Watts Towers - but it is pretty. And it is as strong as a dinosaur's skeleton which keeps the muscles and the skin together and upright. Here the muscles are the construction itself and the sky is the flesh.
