WATTS TOWERS by Sam Rodia

verticality height and upward movement

The Watts Towers as seen from the rear of the parcel of land where Sam Rodia had lived and worked in his spare time.

Sam must have immensely amused himself creating these connecting lines in space - decorating them with colored shards, glass and seashells. I think that he is unique in this construction method - not the ferrocement technique, because that was quite popular at the time - but the creation of the linear structures - no mass or volume. He loved airy light and transparent structures. This work almost makes me wonder about a possible connection to Piet  Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie paintings. The black lines in Piet's earlier works becoming intermittent dots of color. Who would compare Piet Mondrian's work to the creation of Simon Rodia? of course there can't be a connection. Can there?
