verticality height and upward movement

The Watts Towers as seen from the rear of the parcel of land where Sam Rodia had lived and worked in his spare time.
Two of the towers are connected by embellished arches with hearts between them. (see a detail)

These arches remind us of Gothic flying buttresses. They must have been made purely for their visual function because we see on the left that they connect to a vertical which is not directly connected to the core of the left tower.
